CLEAN WATER PROJECT 2011

Mawa-Msindo village got clean water in August 2011. The village is in the new district of Namtumbo (used to be in Songea district) has about 300 families. All villagers received the news of getting clean water with great joy. Men and women, children and adult alike participated in digging a trench and laying pipe. The village join four other villages that have been using the water since 2004. We thank the late Fr. Pirmin Ngolle, OSB, of Hanga Abbey who pioneered the project and the donors from the US.

Still another village,  Zomba-Mwungano, in the rural district of Songea had 12 wells drilled and mannual water pumps installed during the period of October – December 2011.  The village has a population of close to 5,ooo people. Villagers hailed the project as miracle! Unlike the other villagers who were involved in digging trench and laying pipes, villagers here had to just wait technicians drill the wells and install the mannual water pumps. But there is responsibility of keeping the pumps working. To assure the continued operating of the pumps after they break each each adult villager will be contributing $0.5 annually for repairs.

Below are some photos of the process that took place in accomplishing this project.

A drilling machine at site ready for the drilling

As the motor runs the drill rig water has to be injected (pumped in and out) to make it easy for the drill.

A plastic pipe of 4 inches diameter is pushed in the drilled hole. Through this pipe a pump will be lowered into the well

A  cylindrical metal cap is put on the 4″ plastic pipe prodruding above the well

A pump is fitted to the lower end of a steel rod and the pipe that will bring water to the surface from the well.

A metal head with pumping handle is installed

A concrete floor is built around the well and ready for permanent use
