Nakagugu Formation House

The Nakagugu formation house, located 8km east of Hanga, was created in 1986 under the supervision of Fr. Winfred Mlowe to provide young men who express an interest in monasticism with an opportunity to experience this way of life.  Students who attend the formation house have recently finished primary education and are given pre-secondary schooling as well as spiritual direction to develop their religious calling.  We direct our spiritual guidence through daily mass and prayer.

Vision:  The mission of our school is to provide young men with the opportunity to find and explore their religious vocation.  Over the past few years, upon completion of form 4 at the Seminary, a handful of our graduates have even gone on to apply for candidacy and have become monastic members of our Hanga community.  For those students who find a vocation outside of our community, we hope that they continue to live by the Rule of St. Benedict and the values that we have instilled in them during their years with us.

Cirriculm Offered:  At Nakagugu we focus our curriculum on the essential subjects that will best prepare our students for Form 1 education, including English and mathematics. We also give them the opportunity to learn more about the monastic life through religion and formation courses.  English and math provide the essential background for students as they advance to secondary education while religion and formation principles give the spiritual guidance and direction for monastic living.

FootballStudents Life:  We try to create an environment similar to Hanga monastic life in Nakagugu. We focus our days on the motto “prayer and work.”  Outside of studying, students work in the fields, care for the animals, and cook their own meals.  All the food is grown in the gardens and completely run by the students.  Each week the students are also given time to play soccer.

Housing:  Standard housing is provided for all students of the Formation House, and students are supplied with 3 meals each day.

Registration Process:  If you are interested in attending Nakagugu we ask that you follow the following steps:

  • First, we ask that you contact your local parish priest or catechist and discuss the option of attending our Formation house.  If this person decides that you are truly interested and qualified to study at Nakagugu, they will then need to contact Hanga Abbey
  • After this we will invite you to come to view our facilities and take our pre-form 1 examination.  Upon completion of the tests we will notify you as to whether or not you have been accepted.

Our tuition rates fluctuate year to year due to the growing number of students and needs of our staff. Please visit our Hanga schools page for the latest information.
