This last mid May 2012, the district of Songea had pupils of elementary school talent shows in traditional dances. The gathering was held at Hanga Abbey grounds because of the availability of the grounds, accommodation and food services. The students performed different traditional dances represented by diferent schools. Indeed one could see that the so thought old traditional dances still exist and have not sucumbed to the modern western music dances.
One of the most exhilarating dance was the traditional Ngoni war dance commonly called “ligihu” in Ngoni language. The dancers wore traditional garbs holding spears and shields as they danced. See photos.
